Used Quality Wine Barrels – Shaping the Market 

A gap in the industry for used quality wine barrels was apparent to Roger Burson. He was working at Meridian Winery, one of California’s largest wineries in the late 90’s. He saw that winemakers needed barrels from trusted sources, but struggled to find them at reasonable prices.

Roger saw an opportunity to solve this problem and improve the industry at the same time.

He launched a new market niche: a used wine barrel exchange focused entirely on used barrels still suitable for winemaking. Therefore, instead of letting good barrels get scrapped or cut into planters, he gave them a second life.  

Roger’s goal was simple: provide winemakers with certified, pre-inspected used wine barrels at far lower prices than new barrels.

As a result, he would save thousands of barrels from the saw blade before their time.

Setting a New Standard for Used Wine Barrel Quality

To make sure every barrel was of exceptional quality, Roger created a tough 5-Point Inspection process. He even reconfigured a name-brand planer tool to precisely remove wine staining and residuals without taking the barrel apart. 

The 5-Point Inspection and Certification system became the gold standard others now follow.

Giving Barrels New Life

Barrels unsuitable for winemaking don’t go to waste.  The team hand-crafts them into garden planters for the garden, the patio, or any other place that needs that rustic charm.

Additionally, recoopered barrels form a major part of the used Quality Wine Barrels recycling program. Barrels are refurbished and re-toasted to have a like new oak profile similar to the original cooperage.
