For centuries, wine barrels have been recoopered to extend their life after becoming “neutral,” meaning they’ve lost their ability to impart flavors from the oak to the wine.
Recoopering rejuvenates the barrel, offering a cost-effective alternative to new oak barrels. Quality Wine Barrels Cooperage has developed a proprietary process to safely remove the residual wine and contaminants from the oak, ensuring the barrel’s structure remains intact.
The staves are shaved 3/16th to 5/16th-inch thinner and the barrel is retoasted to restore its ability to impart oak flavors, such as vanillin and tannins, at a rate similar to a new barrel. This process gives the wine a similar oak profile to the original cooper’s style.
